Believe it or not Galentine’s Day started over ten years ago, don’t panic if this is the first year you’ve heard about it! It’s only in recent years that the holiday has become popular and for good reason. Celebrated on the 13th February Galentine’s Day is all about celebrating your favourite girl friends, showering them with love, attention and compliments, they’ve been through it all with you and now is the time to celebrate that friendship. . . more than you do any other day.
The idea of Galentine’s Day was created by a fictional character; Leslie Knope of Parks and Recreation. In this particular episode she is seen gathering a group of her closest gal pals to celebrate their friendship. Leslie says it best when she says it’s all about ‘ladies celebrating ladies’ and who wouldn’t want to get on board with that?
Now of course it’s not compulsory to celebrate Galentine’s Day but it’s a great excuse to get the girls together and the best way to celebrate normally involves a bottomless brunch. Unfortunately that can’t quite happen at the moment so here are a few suggestions to celebrate virtually on Zoom:
· Just how well do you think you all know each other? There is a good chance that we’ve all hit Zoom quiz fatigue but if you are ready for one more session then here is an idea for a round. We’ve all got those embarrassing Facebook statuses that we’d like to keep buried BUT they are gold for a quiz round! Go through your friends Facebook history and dig for those statuses, let the group guess who wrote them and then have a good ol’ giggle at the memories.
· Mix the same cocktails . . . Find out who the best mixologist is by all making the same cocktails. Agree on the drinks menu before the call so everyone can buy their ingredients, make the drinks during the call and judge who has the best mixologist skills.
· Host a book club. Get the conversation flowing by discussing a book and because it’s Galentine’s Day why not focus on books where the theme is friendship?
· Order each other take away. Assign each friend a name and order delivery takeout for each other, you know your friend best so choose them something that you know they would love but wouldn’t normally order for themselves. Everyone logs onto Zoom before the food arrives so you can see their face when the meal is delivered, then enjoy eating dinner and chatting the night away together.
Ultimately Galentine’s Day is about celebrating your friendships and however you chose to do that we know your friends will love you for it!
